Ukraine August 2015

Bio Auto, a chinese-based EV, now surfacing in the Ukraine

Surprise! Edition

Plug-in car sales sometimes appear from unexpected places, like in this case, where despite a troubled economy and a shrinking auto market, EV's are flourishing in the Ukraine, with a 400% growth YoY and close to 1% EV Share, thanks to recently approved import tax exemptions for electric cars.

231 units were sold to date this year, with the Nissan Leaf representing the bulk of units (149), pulling this market from obscurity since last year, when it won the Best Seller title by a (small) landslide.

Tesla is Second, followed closely by Renault, where the Fluence ZE is its best-seller.

Outside the Podium, the Ford Focus Electric is Fourth(!), with 11 units, a world best position for the american hatch, followed by the C-Zero from Citröen and 7 units from the little known Bio Auto automaker (Does anyone has more information on them?)

Interesting market, isn't it? (Wink, wink, VW and BMW...)

    1. A total of 26,000 cars were registered in Ukraine during the January—August period, while EVs are moving to hold a 1% share [or 231 units]

    1. I don't think so, i think Bio cars are Chery based, but i'm not sure.

Any help regarding this would be appreciated.

    2. The company is Hong Kong based (or at least registered).

Chery on the other hand is in Wuhu and also has almost 10% of the Ukrainian car market anyway through the VAZ brand.
The four EV models doesn't really look much like any of the Chery models and look even cheaper.
It would be easy enough to sell them under either the Chery brand or the VAZ brand also if they were theirs.

So my bet is on not from Chery. But I don't have a better suggestion.

And since there were over 300 000 EVs of those kinds sold in China last year there are lots of companies to go through to find the right one.

One thing is sure, it's definitely not BYD at least. =) It's a bigger chance that it's Mercedes who made it.

    3. ZAZ brand not VAZ and they have lots of other models than from Chery, my bad.

  3. I wonder if the fact that Ukraine is effectively at war with Russia, who are one of their major suppliers of fuel, is why they have decided to support electric cars to reduce dependency (if only symbolicly) on Russia.

  4. Jose,
Information about electric vehicle sales in eastern Europe and Russia . Here is some information about sales in Russia and the new law requiring all gas stations to carry EV charging equipment.

  5. Here is a link to some sales figures for EVs in Russia.

Not too many EVs in Russia yet but it is good to see some sales figures at long last for Eastern European countries like Ukraine, Poland and Russia.
