China August 2015 (UPDATED)

BYD Song (Above) and Yuan (Below): Next weapons to reach the Global Best Seller title

BYD Qin Flattens Edition

Sales were at 14.629 units last month, a new worldwide all-time record, with YoY growth standing at an explosive 230%, and with new models coming in, things can only get better, but more that in a minute...

The big news is that for the first time, the leader BYD Qin dropped sales regarding the previous month (3.534 vs 4.030), with the last four months sitting between 3.500 to 4.000 units, the PHEV sedan might have found its natural sales level, and a not too shabby one, as even last months weaker result placed it in #120 in the global ranking, while being also the third best selling BYD last month, behind the F3 compact sedan and the S7 SUV.

BYD Tang: Rising Star
On a brighter note for BYD, the Tang plug-in SUV is already in the thousands area in only its third sales month (Comparatively, the Qin sold 834 units in its third month), with registrations rising to 1.432 sales (Making a 1-2 for BYD in August), which might indicate that the natural sales level of the SUV will be significantly higher that the Qin. But it's not all, not glad with the ramping up of the Tang, the second of three(!) BYD PHEV SUV's has shown up already, with the Song registering its first 35 units, not happy with the SUV launch, the chinese carmaker also landed in the LCV EV market, with the first 28 registrations of the T3 delivery Van. BYD is relentlessly pushing the EV market up...

Looking at the rest of the competition, the SAIC Roewe 550 PHEV is looking to replicate the BYD Qin success, by selling a record 1.628 units last month and rising to #3, while the Kandi Panda EV registered 871 sales, its best performance since March, now up to #9, with the Lazarus JAC i EV keeping its recent good performances and climbing to #7.

In a month filled with newcomers, a final note for the landing of the Dongfeng Fengshan E30/E30L, a car that have been in the waiting for far too long, it registered its first 61 units, let's see in the coming months if Zotye, Kandi and Chery have reason to worry with this new opponent.

  1. I wouldn't draw too many conclusions about the fall in the Qin sales last month yet.
The stock market collapse could have had an effect, but beyond that so much is happening at BYD that production could be affected, as they are ramping Tang sales rapidly as well as starting production of the Song.

That can affect everything from the production lines to the availability of batteries.

Of course it is also perfectly possible that the Tang is taken away from Qin sales and they have now dropped to their natural levels, but we aren't going to have a handle on it for some time.

    1. Valid points. It's worth noting that the Song is produced in their new factory in Xian and not in Shenzhen, so at least the assembly lines shouldn't interfere with the Tang and Qin.

      Thanks for the info.
Any idea if they are in any way constrained by battery production?

    3. Sorry, I wouldn't know. Their line for some months now has been that battery bottlenecks "will be gradually reduced during this year" as the capacity expansions come online step by step. Whether battery producation grows quicker than demand, I can't tell. Also it's hard to get monthly sales figures for their commercial offerings (mostly buses). My feeling is that they are happy to sell hybrids with rather small battery for the moment rather than more aggressively marketing their pure BEVs (at least for passenger cars). It helps them keep battery demand reasonable and turnover high.

  2. BYD is very strong. They expect to sell 60.000 EVs this year, but sold around 26.600 YTD. This means they want to reach ~8.000cars/month. December might count close to 10.000 EVs/month. BYD is literally going in rocket mode, with their 5-4-2 cars. Cool.

What do you think, will we see December with (?):
    3.500 Quin
    4.000 Tang
    1.500 Song
    1.000 Yuan
    Things are getting interesting. :)

    1. I agree it will be around those numbers, but my money would be a little more on the Qin and a little less on the Yuan :-)

    2. Yeah, the Yuan will most likely only hit the market in early 2016. Maybe December if we're lucky. But 1000 is probably pushing it.

Can't wait for it, anyway. The other two SUVs are ok-looking, but the Yuan I find veritably good-looking, even cool.

    3. Thanks for the info, yes 1000 sales on the first month seems a bit far streched ;-)

  3. If Kandi has only sold 3,600 of Panda clown car YTD then its looking real tough for them to make 25,000 full year 2015 guidance.

    KNDI still a short

  5. The 35 units of Song are not PHEV version, they are petroleum fuel. The PHEV Song will launch at the end of this year.

    1. Where are your sources from? I read that the song launches in the second half of 2015. Which might be already.

    3. Several sources (Lef Lane, nev.ofweek.com, etc), say the 35 units registered in August were PHEV and the regular ICE version will be launched later.

    4. Thanks Jose, but what asked for was where "do zh" got his information from. Since he provided nothing and you stated more than one source it means your numbers seems far more likely.

  6. If you can read chinese, there are lots of information about song petorleum version(formly called S3). I don't know where is english introduction. But I can give some tips:
    1. See the right bottom tag of the car, it is "2.0 TID". The Phev version tag would be "4.9s", same with Tang.

    2. the price of the current version is below 150000 CNY, the price of PHEV version is arround 180000 CNY
    3. You will see the sold number of song will be very high in the first three month(I guess it will reach 5000 in october). it is not possible to reach this number for PHEV version
